How to control Supabase costs with the Spend Cap

The main cost control Supabase offers is the Spend Cap on the Pro plan. When it is on, you can't go past your plan's quota for the covered usage items, so you aren't billed for over-usage on those items. Several items are not covered, including Compute. See all 9 providers.

Turn it on
You can also choose it when you create an organization on the Pro plan. Supabase notes that on the Free plan "you will not be charged."
What happens with the Spend Cap off
Supabase says that with the cap off, "Your projects will continue to operate after exceeding the quota for a usage item. Any additional usage will be charged based on the item's cost per unit." Supabase lists "system attacks or bugs in your software" as scenarios that can lead to high usage.
Hosting the frontend on Vercel or Netlify? Vercel and Netlify have caps too.
What the cap covers
Per Supabase's docs, the Spend Cap covers: Disk Size, Egress, Edge Function Invocations, Logs Ingest, Logs Query, Monthly Active Users, Monthly Active SSO Users, Monthly Active Third Party Users, Realtime Messages, Realtime Peak Connections, Storage Image Transformations and Storage Size.
After you exceed the quota for a covered item, "further usage of that item is disallowed until the next billing cycle." Supabase may also restrict services under its Fair Use Policy if you keep exceeding quota.
What it does not cover
These items keep billing even with the cap on: Compute, Branching Compute, Read Replica Compute, Custom Domain, additionally provisioned Disk IOPS and Disk Throughput, IPv4 address, Log Drain Hours, Log Drain Events, Multi-Factor Authentication Phone, and Point-in-Time-Recovery. Supabase says these are "predictable and explicitly opted into by the user."
Supabase also says the Spend Cap "doesn't allow for fine-grained cost control, such as setting budgets for specific usage item or receiving notifications when certain costs are reached."
Keep an eye on the rest
- Check the organization's usage page.
- The Upcoming Invoice section of the billing page shows current spend and an estimate for the cycle.
